Project BMX: Evolve’s Tribute to BMX Heritage with an Electric Edge

Evolve, the innovator in personal electric mobility, proudly presents Project BMX. This ambitious project melds the enduring charm of 80s BMX bikes, made famous by the beloved film, with state-of-the-art electric technology. The electric BMX, featuring a dynamic 24-inch frame and the iconic Skyway Tuff wheels, resurrects the spirit of the BMX era with a modern, electric flair. Having specialised in electric skateboards for 14 years, Evolve is now expanding into the realm of electric bikes.

Jeff Anning, founder of Evolve, reminisces about their journey: “We’ve been making awesome electric skateboards for a long time as we’ve got a good 14 years under our belt now. And I’ve always been thinking, if ever we were going to do something different, what would the product be? We’ve done a couple of other secret projects on the side. We feel like a really cool retro-looking BMX suits Evolve’s ethos.”

Evolve has artfully preserved the BMX’s soul by embedding the battery within the saddle and incorporating a high-performance Bafang M560 Mid Drive Motor. Jared Gilsenan, Industrial Designer at Evolve, underscores their commitment to authenticity: “It has all the adjustability and movement and feel of the traditional bikes. So despite the fact we put a battery in there, we haven’t compromised on the saddle itself.” This approach results in a classic BMX look that is both sophisticated and true to the original design, maintaining the agility and grace of a traditional BMX.

Cutting-Edge Battery Technology

Project BMX introduces a revolutionary 36V battery system, developed in partnership with VELO. Concealed within the saddle, this system enables straightforward battery replacement, extending range without altering the BMX’s iconic silhouette.

Jared Gilsenan reflects on the design journey: “In the last 18 months, we had a new saddle design prototype coming out every month. We spent a lot of time playing with that shape in those contours, making sure that it wasn’t grabbing in any area, but you could still fit a battery underneath.”

Why Choose a Mid Drive Motor?

The Project BMX utilises a strategically placed mid-mounted Bafang M560 motor for optimal weight distribution, enhancing the bike’s handling and providing a more natural pedal-assist experience. This design addresses the challenges of added rotational mass on the rear wheel, ensuring quieter operation, increased efficiency, and extended range.

A Nostalgic BMX Experience

Skyway Tuff Wheels are a crucial element in the BMX retro scene, adding a distinctive charm to Project BMX. The specially engineered hub mount fits a disk rotor on Skyway Tuffs, marrying classic design with the functionality of a modern rear disk brake. Project BMX is an invitation to relive cherished memories, combining the past and present in a unique biking experience.
