suggests New study suggests that being stuck in traffic could have positive effects on relationships

Millions of drivers are expected to hit the roads this week for the busiest week of the summer holidays. According to new consumer research conducted by Gulf, the leading fuel brand operated by Certas Energy, for many drivers, the journey is more important than the destination. The family car has become a therapist’s couch, where people are able to resolve life’s biggest struggles during long drives.

The research, which surveyed 1,000 UK adults planning to drive to a holiday destination this year, found that financial decisions (33%), family disagreements (29%), and relationship issues (22%) are among the top topics discussed while on the road.

When asked why conversations flow more easily in the car, respondents cited no interruptions (48%), having everyone in one space for an extended period of time (46%), no phones or devices (39%), and the lack of eye contact (32%) as the top reasons.

Parents also face the challenge of keeping children entertained in the back seat during long drives. While 20% turn to phones and tablets for some peace, traditional methods are still popular, with 18% relying on sweets and snacks, 17% using travel games, and 15% playing “I Spy”.

Service stations are a major feature of the long drive on holiday, offering a chance to fuel up, stretch legs, and stock up on snacks and last-minute essentials. According to the research, clean toilets (63%), a good range of food and drink (49%), and good parking options (42%) are the top priorities for drivers when stopping at service stations. Other appreciated facilities include a full range of fuels, good customer service, family facilities, and EV charging.

Niall Taylor, Senior Marketing Manager at Certas Energy UK Limited, says, “It’s clear from the research that service stations are a big part of the summer holiday journey. That’s why at Gulf, we ensure that we offer the best service station experience and pride ourselves on great customer service.”

The average staycationer will travel 191 miles to reach their holiday destination, with many driving over 200 miles. They will make 1-2 stops along the way, with 38% stopping exactly twice and 34% stopping once. While 97% of respondents stated they were looking forward to their staycation drive, only 3% dreaded it.

During the long drives, 46% of respondents have used the time to finalize holiday plans, 33% have made financial decisions, 29% have resolved a family disagreement, 22% have made career decisions, 22% have worked through relationship issues, 11% have discussed a house move, and 5% have talked about university or career choices with their children.

The car provides a conducive environment for these discussions, with 48% citing no interruptions, 46% saying having everyone together in one space, 39% noting the lack of phones and devices, and 32% attributing it to the lack of eye contact.

When stopping at service stations, 63% of drivers prioritize clean toilets, 49% want a good range of food and drink, 42% prioritize parking, 27% want a full range of fuels and good availability, and 11% prioritize EV charging.

In conclusion, as millions of drivers embark on their summer road trips, the journey provides an opportunity for families to bond and resolve life’s greatest struggles. And with the help of service stations, it can also be a comfortable and convenient experience.
