“Singer Patti Smith Reflects on 30 Years in the ‘Sassi’ of Matera: “It’s a Beautiful City,” Declares UNESCO”

Patti Smith, the renowned American singer-songwriter, recently graced the city of Matera with her presence and performed a concert at the Gervasio Auditorium. The concert was part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera being inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

In an interview with reporters, Smith expressed her long-standing desire to visit Matera, stating, “I wanted to come to this town for 40 years: it is wonderful.” She also shared her admiration for the stunning views from her hotel room, which she found to be both surprising and moving.

The day after her concert, Smith took a tour of the Sassi, visiting locations that were featured in director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s iconic film, “The Gospel according to St. Matthew.” The film, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary next year, holds a special place in Smith’s heart.

During the interview, Smith was asked about some of her most famous songs, to which she responded by expressing her hope for humanity to find a way to communicate and rebuild a peaceful world.
