Pressure on Germany’s pharmacies: Statistical Yearbook 2025 released

ABDA – Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists has recently released their Statistical Yearbook for 2025, titled “German Pharmacies: Figures, Data, Facts 2025”. This publication offers a comprehensive overview of the latest trends in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors in Germany and beyond.

According to the Yearbook, the number of pharmacies in Germany has decreased once again. As of the end of 2024, there were only 17,041 pharmacies in the country, the lowest number since the late 1970s. This decline is largely attributed to the economic challenges faced by many pharmacies. Despite the increasing demand for pharmaceutical services, the pharmacy remuneration has not been raised in the past 12 years. As a result, approximately 25% of German pharmacies had earnings below 75,000 Euros in 2024 and 7% of pharmacies reported losses.

The Statistical Yearbook presents these and other relevant facts and figures on over 130 pages in a newly redesigned layout that makes the content more accessible than ever before. In addition to statistics on Germany’s community pharmacies and their services, the publication also features a variety of international topics, including “Pharmacy Density across Europe”, “Supply Shortages in Europe”, “Ukrainians and Syrians in the Pharmacy Profession”, “Pharmacy-related Legal Regulations in Europe”, “Comparison by Country: Vaccinations in Pharmacies”, and “Value-added Tax on Pharmaceuticals”. It even includes a chapter on “Europe, Migration, Integration and Sustainability”.

The first edition of ABDA’s Statistical Yearbook “German Pharmacies: Figures, Data, Facts 2025” was released in German on June 7, 2025, in celebration of Pharmacy Day. Both German and English versions can be accessed and downloaded from ABDA’s website. ABDA is the leading organization for pharmacists in Germany and is dedicated to representing the interests of pharmaceutical healthcare professionals in politics and society. It also works towards promoting high-quality and comprehensive pharmaceutical care in Germany. ABDA is a member of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU), the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), and the World Pharmacy Council (WPC).
