North Star, Independent Pub in Cardiff, to Shut Down on New Year’s Eve

North Star, a popular independent community pub located at 131 North Road, Cardiff, CF14 3AE, has announced that it will be permanently closing its doors on New Year’s Eve, 31 December 2025.

After more than five years of serving the community under the North Star name, the pub owners have made the difficult decision to close due to rising costs and economic pressures. Despite exploring all options, they have deemed this closure to be the most responsible course of action.

Owner Tom Edwards expressed his sadness at the closure, stating, “This is without question the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make, and it’s not what we wanted. We’ve explored every possible option to keep North Star going, but in the current climate we feel this is the only responsible choice left to us.”

North Star has been a true independent pub in the area, not owned or leased by a brewery. Since its opening in August 2020, it has become a beloved community hub, welcoming students, local residents, creatives, and musicians alike.

Manager David Rowlands also shared his pride in what the pub has stood for, saying, “We’re immensely proud of what this pub has stood for. This place meant something to people — and that’s what hurts the most.”

The building at 131 North Road has a rich history as a public house, with its first provisional license dating back to 1888. Over the years, it has been known by various names, including the Maindy Hotel and The College Tavern, before finally becoming North Star.

Tom Edwards reflected on the pub’s legacy, saying, “From the Maindy Hotel to the College Tavern to North Star, this building has always been a place for people.” Its closure marks the end of a century-long chapter in Cardiff’s social history.

The pub has been consistently recognized for its role in the community, with WalesOnline describing it as a “Cardiff institution adored by students and locals alike.” In addition, The Cardiff Tab has highlighted its importance to the student and local community.

With a 4.9/5 rating on Tripadvisor and praise for its food, atmosphere, and Sunday roasts, it is clear that North Star has made a significant impact on Cardiff’s hospitality scene. It has even been recognized in national press coverage for its relevance and resonance beyond Cardiff.

The pub will remain open during the festive season, with New Year’s Eve being the final night of service. The team invites customers to join them for a final send-off.
