Miles Asteri, UK Star of The Traitors, Named Celebrity Patron for First Steps ED

First Steps ED, a prominent eating disorders charity, has announced that Miles Asteri, known for his appearance on The Traitors UK in 2024, has been appointed as the organization’s newest celebrity patron. The 37-year-old reality television star will be collaborating with the charity to raise awareness about eating disorders, specifically among men and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Miles brings a deeply personal perspective to his new role, having battled an eating disorder since his late teens. His appointment comes as First Steps ED’s latest annual report revealed a 6% increase in referrals for males in 2023/24, with 20% of all service users now being male. LGBTQ+ individuals are at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder, with a likelihood two to four times greater than the general population.

“I am humbled to be named a patron of First Steps ED,” said Miles Asteri. “For far too long, eating disorders have been wrongly perceived as affecting only women. However, the truth is that men, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community, face unique challenges that can lead to unhealthy relationships with food and body image.”

Miles is publicly sharing his own struggles for the first time, which began when he moved out on his own at the age of 19. “I would weigh myself eight times in an evening, and every time I saw a lower number on the scale, it felt like a small victory. I got down to 70kg and was able to fit into extra small clothes, but those victories never lasted,” he recalled.

Miles’ experience highlights the specific difficulties faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, where harmful messaging surrounding body image can be prevalent. “Within the LGBTQ+ community, the phrase ‘straight skinny is gay fat’ is often circulated. The messaging around body image in our community can be extremely damaging,” Miles explained.

As patron, Miles will support First Steps ED’s campaigns, speak at events, and help develop resources tailored to the experiences of men and LGBTQ+ individuals with eating disorders. He will also advocate for systemic changes, including greater representation of body diversity in fashion and media.

Miles has a message of hope and encouragement for others facing similar struggles: “I know that I am not alone, and there are countless others out there who struggle with similar issues. Eating disorders are complex and can last a lifetime. Despite my progress, I still have days where that mindset creeps back in. But I want to promote a focus on health over obsession, and that is what I will continue to do.”

Based in Derby, First Steps ED operates nationwide, offering care and support to children, young people, and adults affected by eating difficulties and disorders. The charity provides one-to-one support, support groups, and educational workshops to assist individuals, their families, and their communities.

Daniel Magson, CEO of First Steps ED, stated, “Miles’ bravery in sharing his story will be invaluable in our mission to support all those affected by eating disorders. His voice will help us reach communities that have historically been underserved and break down the stigma that prevents so many from seeking help.”
