Micom Calls for Action as Royal Mail Reduces Second-Class Post Delivery

Coventry, UK – Royal Mail has announced its upcoming reform of the Universal Service Obligation (USO) which will go into effect on July 28, 2025. This reform will see a reduction in Second Class letter deliveries to only three days a week, with the elimination of Saturday deliveries. This change has raised concerns for regulated industries, as it could potentially impact timely and compliant customer communications. In response, Micom, the UK’s leading multi-channel communication platform, is urging organizations to adapt now with intelligent digital and hybrid mail solutions.

“This is a wake-up call,” stated Andy Barber, CEO of Micom. “Waiting four or five days for a letter to arrive is no longer acceptable for critical messages such as bank statements, legal notices, or healthcare letters. Customers and regulators expect faster and trackable communications. Micom’s platform ensures that every message reaches its destination on time by combining secure digital delivery with automated postal fallback when needed.”

With letter volumes decreasing by 60% over the past decade, the Ofcom-approved reform comes at a time when 63% of UK mail is generated by regulated sectors (Ofcom, 2024). This poses a potential risk for delayed or non-compliant communications.

Micom warns that businesses relying solely on traditional post may face operational challenges, compliance issues, and rising costs. To address these concerns, Micom’s Customer Communications Management (CCM) platform offers organizations the ability to maintain compliance and resilience by utilizing both digital and physical channels. Key features of the platform include secure digital delivery through encrypted, trackable portals and email, automated mail fallback when digital delivery fails, and compliance-ready workflows with proof of access, audit trails, and SLA monitoring.
