MedTech Cybersecurity: Coauthor Webinar Dives Into Threat Modelling Fundamentals

Last Updated on: 24th April 2025, 04:56 pm

Coauthor, the regulatory companion for medical software development teams, continues its MedTech cybersecurity series by spotlighting a frequently overlooked cornerstone of secure software development — threat modelling.

Set for 30th April 2025, the webinar titled “Threat Modelling: The Foundation of Cybersecurity Success” will demonstrate how integrating security measures early in medical software development can significantly enhance long-term safety and compliance. Cybersecurity expert Harrison Mussell, founder of Periculo, will lead the discussion. With more than a decade of experience navigating frameworks such as ISO 27001, SOC 2, EU MDR, and FDA requirements, Mussell brings a wealth of insight to the session.

In the realm of Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), threat modelling plays a key role early on — ideally during design and risk-planning phases. Although not always initiated from day one, guidance from bodies like the FDA and IEC strongly recommend embedding security practices from the outset.

“Threat modelling is where cybersecurity by design becomes real. It connects the dots between architecture, risk, and regulatory expectations,” said Alan Parkinson, Coauthor’s creator and CEO of Hindsight Software.

Importantly, threat modelling is not a one-time step but an iterative process that must keep pace with product evolution. This proactive approach ensures ongoing risk mitigation and compliance with safety standards such as ISO 14971.

Coauthor’s recently released whitepaper, Securing Medical Devices in an Evolving Cyber Threat Landscape, reinforces the vital role of threat modelling in creating resilient digital health technologies. The webinar will offer a practical introduction to applying threat modelling throughout the SaMD development journey. Attendees are invited to submit their queries in advance to help shape the discussion.

This free-to-attend session will cover:

  • When and how to implement threat modelling

  • Its alignment with risk assessment frameworks like ISO 14971

  • Proper documentation of threats, mitigations, and compliance links

Targeted at developers, cybersecurity leaders, and regulatory specialists, the session offers essential insights for any MedTech team. Registration is open now at: https://www.coauthor.app/webinars
