Majority of British Population Unaware of B12 Deficiency Risk, Misinterpret Symptoms as Stress or Aging

New YouGov data reveals a concerning lack of awareness surrounding vitamin B12 deficiency among the British public. According to the research conducted by YouGov, many individuals attribute symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and poor memory to stress or the natural aging process, when in fact they may be suffering from a deficiency in vitamin B12. Furthermore, experts warn that common gene variants, specifically those related to the MTHFR gene, may exacerbate the issue.

The survey, which was conducted on a nationally representative sample of 2,178 UK adults, highlights a significant gap between risk, awareness, and action among the British public. For instance, despite the fact that nearly one in three individuals in the UK may be at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency due to dietary choices such as following a vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or reduced red meat diet, only 12% of respondents reported taking a daily B12 supplement. Additionally, only 23% of individuals believe they are personally at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.

The survey also revealed confusion among the public when it comes to recognizing the symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. While fatigue (55%) and brain fog (36%) were commonly linked to the condition, other classic neurological signs such as poor memory (32%) and pins and needles (25%) were recognized by a smaller percentage of respondents. Surprisingly, some individuals wrongly attributed symptoms such as constipation and itchy skin to vitamin B12 deficiency.

However, diet is not the only factor that can contribute to a deficiency in vitamin B12. Even individuals who consume animal products may have low levels of B12 due to issues with absorption, age-related changes, or genetics. In such cases, a bioactive B12 supplement, which is in a form that the body can easily use, may be beneficial. For those who struggle to take traditional supplements, a liquid bioactive B12 may also be a more easily absorbed option.
