Gethin Antony from Game of Thrones backs Groundswell initiative for homeless individuals with diabetes and other chronic illnesses

Groundswell, a leading charity dedicated to tackling health inequality, has launched a campaign to address long-term health conditions, specifically diabetes, for individuals experiencing homelessness. The campaign coincides with Diabetes Awareness Week, which runs from June 10th-16th.

According to statistics, more than one in five people experiencing homelessness live with diabetes. This staggering number highlights the urgent need for access to healthcare and support for this vulnerable population.

To mark the launch of the campaign, Groundswell has hosted a conversation between Game of Thrones actor Gethin Anthony and Homeless Health Caseworker Mark Leonard. The two discussed the challenges of managing diabetes while experiencing homelessness and the importance of addressing health inequalities.

Mark, a member of Groundswell’s Homeless Health Peer Advocacy (HHPA) team, shared a powerful anecdote about a man with type 1 diabetes who was rough sleeping and had to resort to storing his insulin in a local canal to keep it cold. With the help of Groundswell, the man was able to secure accommodation and now has access to a fridge to properly store his medication.

Through their HHPA team, Groundswell has supported over 500 people experiencing homelessness to better manage their health, helped them attend over 2,300 vital health appointments, and hosted over 280 health events at hostels and day centres in London alone.

Actor Gethin Anthony, an ambassador for Groundswell, praised the charity’s work and emphasized the importance of accessible healthcare for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances. He encouraged people to donate to support the life-saving and life-changing work of Groundswell.

Michael Chandler, CEO of Groundswell, highlighted the fact that homelessness is a health issue and that individuals are dying from preventable illnesses and conditions, including diabetes. He stressed the essential need to reverse this trend and ensure that everyone has the right to good health.
