Hereford, UK – Hope Spring, a water poverty alleviation charity in Herefordshire, has recently launched a clean water project in the village of Angwan Kyauta in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The project, expected to be completed in eight weeks, aims to provide safe and clean drinking water to approximately eighty households in the northern Nigerian village.
The project is a collaborative effort between Hope Spring and the local community, fully funded by donations generated through the charity’s website and its popular Online Charity Christmas cards. The planned borehole will offer residents of Angwan Kyauta a reliable and accessible source of drinking water, reducing their reliance on unsafe surface water and other potentially contaminated sources.
Bolu Olorunfemi, the Project Manager, stated, “This project is not simply about drilling a borehole; it is about delivering a dependable water facility that the community can use and maintain for years to come.” The construction process, which includes site preparation, Geo Survey, drilling, installation of water infrastructure, and testing, will begin shortly. The team will also make arrangements for the eventual handover of the facility to the community.
Lolade Aderibigbe, a spokesperson for Hope Spring Water, expressed her gratitude towards the collaboration between donors, local leaders, and community members. “Once completed, the borehole will provide families with more than just relief from thirst,” she said.
Incorporating community participation into the planning and implementation of the borehole has been a priority. Peter Hamidu, the Project Coordinator, has been instrumental in bridging the language barrier and facilitating communication with volunteers and community members.
“Our goal is to ensure that every stage of the borehole project is carefully coordinated with the needs of the Angwan Kyauta community,” said Hamidu. “Over the expected eight-week delivery period, we will work closely with local representatives, technical teams, and other stakeholders to keep the project progressing safely and efficiently.”
The importance of the project in promoting public health is well-established. According to the World Health Organization, contaminated drinking water can transmit diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid, and polio. WHO also recognizes safe water, sanitation, and hygiene as essential foundations for health, livelihoods, school attendance, dignity, and resilient communities.
Despite the ongoing Angwan Kyauta borehole project, many rural communities in Nigeria still lack convenient access to safe and dependable drinking water.
