The Deutschlandmuseum in Berlin has been honoured with the THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement, informally known as the ‘Oscar of the entertainment sector’. This marks the first time a German museum has received this prestigious accolade, which is widely considered one of the highest honours bestowed in the entertainment industry.

The THEA Award will be presented to the Deutschlandmuseum at a ceremony in Hollywood in March 2024. Other past recipients include Universal Studios, Disneyland, the Shanghai Astronomy Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Opened in June 2023, the Deutschlandmuseum was designed to provide visitors with an immersive experience of history, utilising techniques developed in amusement parks and the film industry. Visitors are taken on a journey through the Middle Ages and modern times, from the battle in the Teutoburg Forest between the Germanic tribes and the Romans, to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Robert Rückel, founder of the Deutschlandmuseum, said: “The THEA is a very special award because it acknowledges the extraordinary way in which our exhibition draws visitors into a genuine historical experience. Our goal was to create a museum that makes the complex history of Germany accessible to everyone. The fact that we are the first German recipient of the award shows how impressed the judges must have been by our pioneering concept.”

The Deutschlandmuseum has gained worldwide attention for its unique approach to providing an immersive visitor experience. The institution has now been recognised with the THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement, informally known as the ‘Oscar of the entertainment sector’, becoming the first German museum to receive this honour. Max Krüger, spokesperson for the Deutschlandmuseum, said: “We are delighted to be presented with such a prestigious award and hope it can serve as an inspiration for other museums in Germany.”
