Allendale Community Centre Commits to Disability Confidence

Wimborne’s Allendale Community Centre has recently achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to inclusivity. The centre has been officially recognized as a Disability Confident Committed employer, reaching Level 1 status in the government-backed scheme.

The Disability Confident scheme aims to support employers in creating more inclusive and accessible workplaces for individuals with disabilities and long-term health conditions. This recognition reflects the centre’s dedication to providing meaningful paid and voluntary opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, neurodivergence, and mental health challenges.

What sets Allendale Community Centre apart is its genuine understanding and first-hand experience of disability. An internal survey revealed that over 50% of the centre’s staff and volunteers have personal experience with disability or have a family member with a disability.

Carole Chedgy, a trustee for Allendale Community Centre, expressed pride in achieving Disability Confident Committed status and highlighted the valuable contributions of individuals with disabilities in various roles within the centre, including public-facing positions in the café, reception, theatre, and events.

Chedgy emphasized the centre’s commitment to creating a more inclusive community in Wimborne, stating that they want individuals to be recognized for their abilities, contributions, and potential. The centre will continue to work towards breaking down barriers and providing more inclusive opportunities.

The Level 1 commitment is just the beginning of Allendale Community Centre’s journey with the Disability Confident scheme. The centre has plans to further develop its employment practices and progress through the scheme, demonstrating its ongoing dedication to inclusivity.
